Myles Munroe Biography

Dr. Myles Munroe (20 April 1954 – 9 November 2014) was a renowned evangelist, author, motivational speaker, leadership consultant, and ordained minister. He was the founder and president of the Bahamas Faith Ministries International (BFMI) and a respected global voice on leadership and personal development.

Munroe, an officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE), also served as chairman of the International Third World Leaders Association and president of the International Leadership Training Institute.

Tragically, on 9 November 2014, Munroe, his wife, two BFMI pastors, and seven others lost their lives in a plane crash. According to Bahamian Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell, “Their private jet collided with a shipping container crane while attempting to land in heavy rain.”

Early Life and Education

Myles Munroe was born on April 20, 1954, in Nassau, Bahamas, into a poor family of eleven siblings. Growing up in one of the Bahamas’ most impoverished neighborhoods, Munroe and his family endured harsh living conditions—sleeping on floors infested with rats and cockroaches.

At just 12 years old, driven by a quest to discover whether God was real, Munroe read through the four Gospels of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John). By 14, he had memorized them entirely. These scriptures dispelled his doubts, instilling in him an unshakable belief that “nothing is impossible with God.”

Munroe pursued higher education with relentless determination. In 1978, he graduated from Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma—a Christian institution—where he earned a degree in Education, Fine Arts, and Theology. His academic journey didn’t end there; he went on to obtain three additional bachelor’s degrees, a master’s degree, and five honorary doctorates from various institutions.

Personal Life

In 1978, Myles Munroe married Ruth Munroe, his lifelong partner and co-pastor at Bahamas Faith Ministries International (BFMI). Their union was blessed with two children: a son, Myles Jr. (Chairo), and a daughter, Charisa.

Ministry

Munroe’s ministry began humbly in the early 1980s after he graduated from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Through his dedication and vision, this small beginning grew into the globally influential BFMI, impacting countless lives through leadership training, evangelism, and biblical teaching.

Death

Tragically, on November 9, 2014, Myles Munroe, his wife Ruthtwo BFMI pastors, and seven others lost their lives in a plane crash while en route to Freeport, Grand Bahama, for a leadership conference.

Investigations revealed that their private jet collided with a crane at a shipyard during heavy rain and severe weather. Foreign Minister Fred Mitchell later stated:
“A commercial airline on the same route had turned back due to the dangerous conditions, but the private plane continued, leading to the fatal accident.”
